Amazing Azores
Photo Adventure

Highlights

  • Small group of maximum 6 photographers and two professional photographer leaders: Alyce Bender, a Tamron Americas Ambassador, and Bruno Ázera, local guide and renowned Azorean photographer who has been featured in publications such as National Geographic.

  • Explore three of the nine islands as only locals know them! We will discover the photographic gems of São Miguel, Terceira, and Flores.

  • Timing of tour correlates to the early summer wildflower blooms, to include hydrangea, wild roses, and many others while still having enough rain for many of the waterfalls.

  • Ideal photography tour for those interested in learning more about all aspects of landscape photography, from small scenes to grand land and seascapes.

  • Drones are allowed in many locations throughout the islands and participants are encouraged to bring them if they have them!

The Azores, with their rugged volcanic origins and unique lower Northern Atlantic placement, are a destination of both beauty and adventure. The archipelago’s rugged cliff lines, lush valleys with rolling hills and dense forests, breathtaking vistas over volcanic lakes and open ocean provide endless opportunities for photographers willing to venture to these shores. From wildflowers to waterfalls, sea caves to lava tubes, rolling fields to towering cliffs, the Azores has much to offer the nature photographer both in grand landscapes as well as small scenes and macro subjects. Beyond that though, the Azores also has a wealth of beautiful culture that we will get to experience, from delicious local cuisine to photographing one of the world's UNESCO Heritage cities - Angra do Heroísmo.

Join Alyce Bender and
Bruno Ázera as they show you exactly how amazing the Azores are through a lens!

Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrive in Terceira (TER)

As most international flights arrive early to mid-morning, we will gather and have a warm meal where introductions will be made, expectations will be discussed, and photography strategies for the island conditions will be taught. Please try to arrive by 11am.

We will then head out into our first photography session. As weather plays a big part in landscape photography and the islands have a constantly shifting weather pattern, we will be fluid with our locations and chase the light for the best photographic conditions.

Day 2/3 – Explore the Island of Terceira

Up early for sunrise, we will roam across this beautiful pastoral island that will give us photographic opportunities that range from rolling grassy fields to dark, mossy forests, and lava tube chambers. Between Bruno and I, we will show you both more well-known and more secret spots here on the second most popular island of the Azores. Again, our locations and subjects will be based on the weather conditions as the islands can show us a full range of moods in a single day.

Day 4 – Fly to Flores

We will take the early flight to the most Western point of European continent, the island of Flores. Appropriately named, this island can be covered with so many blooms that sides of the mountains look blanketed with pure color. Fewer than 3500 people live on the island and it boasts some of the largest portions of lands of untouched by human activities. We will find a wide range of breathtaking landscapes with many waterfalls, tall cliff lines, and rich flora biodiversity.

Day 5/6 - Explore the Island of Flores

With so many photographic opportunities on the island, many locations can yield additional portfolio images given a change in weather. So we take two full days to view and review all we can that this island has to offer. Even as the smallest of the three islands we visit, it is by far a photographically dense island, worthy of the time.

Day 7 - Fly to São Miguel

We say good-bye to our second island and head to the largest and most populated island of the Azores – São Miguel. When we arrive, we will head out for our first location on this island (location weather dependent). Again, we will have a multitude of subjects to choose from as São Miguel is home to several caldera lakes, stunning sunset beaches, and hidden waterfalls surrounded by lush canyons.

Day 8 - Explore the Island of São Miguel

Up early, we will make the most of our time on this island to really create another wonderful portfolio of images that showcase what this island has to offer in the way of natural scenic beauty. Chasing the light, moody weather, possibility of rainbows, and with access to one of the top 250 gardens in the world, we have plenty to fill both the day and our memory cards.

Day 9 - Last Session Before Departures from São Miguel (PDL)

Again, we will leave the hotel early for a last sunrise session that will stretch into midmorning to ensure the maximum time in the field before the group departs for other adventures. After the morning session we will return to check out of the hotel and have a last group meal before getting everyone to the airport for late afternoon/evening flights home. Please do not plan to depart before 4pm.
